As a Black female presenting and identified psychologist working in academia community psychology, and private practice, I understand the importance of presenting oneself with confidence and style while also being multifaceted. The tagline of the It Gal for sure. Fashion and beauty are not just about looking good; they are about feeling empowered and expressing your unique identity, remaining authentic, and gaining access to or creating spaces for advancement especially when paired with the professional world. Here are eight tips to help you elevate your "professional look" while staying true to yourself.

1. Embrace Your Unique Style: Your style is a reflection of who you are. Embrace your individuality by incorporating pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable. Whether it’s a bold statement necklace or a pair of chic heels, let your personality shine through your wardrobe.
2. Invest in Quality Basics:Â This is one place where being basic is where it's at! Quality basics are the foundation of a versatile wardrobe. Invest in well-fitted blazers, tailored trousers, and classic blouses. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a variety of professional looks. This is how we avoid the "I have nothing to wear" cries while having one or two closets full of clothes. (Cousin, I'm looking at you!)
3. Play with Colors and Patterns: Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors and patterns. While neutrals are always a safe bet, adding a pop of color or a bold print can make your outfit stand out. Consider incorporating colors that complement your skin tone and make you feel vibrant. Animal print is always a safe bet, and I'm always a fan of an Ankara print - fists up.
4. Prioritize Comfort:Â Comfort is key, especially when you have a busy schedule, and are managing multiple responsibilities. Opt for comfortable yet stylish shoes and breathable fabrics. When you feel comfortable, it boosts your confidence and allows you to focus on your work. There's a time, place, and occasion for our slay-over-comfort pieces. It often is not found in the day-to-day.

5. Keep Your Makeup Simple: For a professional setting, aim for a natural makeup look. A flawless base, subtle eyeshadow, and a touch of mascara can enhance your features without being overpowering. I'm a fan of bold transitional blend like the next Jackie Asamoah or Danessa Myricks girly, and for my day-to-day tend to stick with one or two shades in the same family, often brown, and a neutral or peachy blush. Don’t forget to keep your lips moisturized and add a hint of color. I'm a fan of being bold here with a bluish-red. whispers makes your teeth look white
6. Maintain a Skincare Routine:Â Healthy skin is the foundation of any beauty routine. Establish a skincare regimen that works for you, including cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from the sun. Hydrated and glowing skin will make you feel more confident. I exfoliate twice a week since I gym, use an in-shower oil, and try to do my toner for my face in the shower as well while my pores are nice and open. Don't forget - adequate water intake is a part of good skincare too!
7. Accessorize Thoughtfully:Â Accessories can elevate any outfit. ANY. Choose pieces that complement your look without overwhelming it. And really, you determine what overwhelm is. I've been known for a Chanel brooch cluster situation... so... A classic watch, delicate earrings, or a stylish handbag can add a touch of sophistication to your ensemble. And a perfect chunky statement necklace or large earrings can be just the thing to set it all off. Depending on the setting and what you're doing that day you make adjustments. One rule of thumb I heard for not "overdoing it" is to remove the last thing you put on right before you leave out the door.
8. Stay Updated with Trends: While it’s important to have timeless pieces, staying updated with current fashion trends can keep your wardrobe fresh and exciting. Incorporate trendy items in moderation to keep your look modern and relevant. One thing I try to be thoughtful about is if the trend is in line with my general aesthetic, I can invest some coin into a piece. If it's not really, I'm ok with a dupe or a Shein splurge so I don't feel bad when it's on its way to Goodwill.
Fashion and beauty are powerful tools for self-expression and confidence. By embracing your unique style, investing in quality basics, and prioritizing comfort, you can create a professional look that reflects your true self. Your inner ICON. Remember, the most important thing is to feel good in what you wear. When you feel confident, it shows in everything you do! Ciao bellas!
